How to Beat Tres Angustias in Blasphemous

Tres Angustias in Blasphemous

Tres Angustias is, or at least should be (since in the end you can tackle things in whatever order you want), the third of the big bosses you need to beat in Blasphemous to open the huge door that leads to the game’s final area.

The name says it all: this time you’re not facing one boss, but three at once. But don’t worry, even though there are three of them it’s not that bad. In fact, where it really gets tricky is when they merge into one big boss, but at least that happens once it’s already much lower on health.

I’d say that difficulty-wise it’s on the level of Our Lady of the Charred Visage; I died more or less the same number of times against both. That wouldn’t be the case if it weren’t for this boss’s second phase, which is the real challenge.

Tres Angustias Location

Tres Angustias is a boss you can find in “Grievance Ascends“. To get there, you need to start from where you fought Perpetva. Just keep moving forward and you’ll reach a new area called “Jondo” (the name reminds me a lot of Anor Londo).

There you’ll need to find a couple of statues holding some chains (not the statue with one of those “pots” on top that also has chains, which you’ll find at the start) and hit them several times until they break. Doing that opens access to, now finally, “Grievance Ascends”.

The boss is in the easternmost part of the area.

Phase 1 Attack Guide

As I mentioned, the fight has two phases, and Tres Angustias goes into the second one when its health is pretty low (when it has about 10% or at most 20% left, eyeballing it), so this time we’ll go in order.

In phase 1 you’ll have to face all three at once, but honestly they kind of do their own thing, and it’s not like they coordinate well to deal a lot of damage. Sometimes they’ll spread out a bit and other times they’ll stick together, but in general they’re not very aggressive and tend to stay more or less together. Let’s go over their attacks in this phase!

  • Spike Toss: Every now and then one of the Angustias will throw a spike at you. It’s easy to spot, since you’ll see one of them stay suspiciously still, and its spike will always point toward you. When you see that happen, get ready to dodge the hit. It’s not very hard to dodge with the dash or a parry, but the attack is really fast (luckily we can see it coming).
  • Spinning Mace: I don’t know exactly what this type of weapon is called, but you’ll get the idea. In this attack a spinning weapon appears, moves all over the screen and eventually returns to its owner. It’s pretty annoying, but if you’re careful it won’t deal too much damage.
  • Fusion: Very occasionally the Tres Angustias will merge to perform a joint attack that creates a huge vertical purple pillar around them, with a wide reach. When this happens, get away from it.

This boss also has a “trick”: each Angustia has its own hitbox, which means that when they’re together you can hit the boss several times with the same attack. When they’re together, take the chance to hit them, and try to hit all three at once so its health drops quickly.

As for tips for this boss, I recommend bringing the “Sacred Thrust, Sacred Lunge…” skill, since depending on how you catch them you’ll be able to quickly reach all three (or as many as you can) and deal quite a bit of damage at the same time. If you catch all three, the hit really pays off.

One more tip: equip the magic you get at the start of Blasphemous, “Verdiales of the Forsaken Hamlet”, since it’ll be easy to hit the Angustias several times with it.

Phase 2

In Phase 2 the Tres Angustias merge for good, and depending on how it catches you, it can get pretty tough. It’ll also depend on how much health the boss has left, because even though it seems to enter phase 2 at a certain health percentage… there seems to be a bit of a delay, so you might have time to land a few extra hits before it transforms.

Anyway, the boss stays at the bottom of the screen (sometimes moving to one side or the other) and constantly summons vertical purple pillars, even two at a time. You’ll be able to see where they’ll appear because some little sparkles show up at the bottom of the screen (remember the attack has a lot of reach).

My advice is to be patient. Dodge, dodge and don’t attack until you see a clear opening to hit it without taking damage from its attacks, which won’t happen as often as you’d like (or at least that’s what happened to me). Be very careful, because it’s easy to “fall” off the screen if you get hit by one of its attacks (depending on where it catches you, of course), and that means instant death.

Oh, and once again our healer friend is here to help, but it seems that after calling her three times (that’s my case) she… well, you’ll see. The point is that you’ll get a new Prayer called: Dreamshi… I mean… “Zarabanda of the Safe Haven”.

Esdras de la Legión Ungida en Blasphemous
Esdras

Esdras is easily the toughest Blasphemous boss I’ve run into so far, especially when Perpetva joins the party in phase 3. Here’s where to find him, all his attacks and the build that worked best for me to survive.
