How to Beat Our Lady of the Charred Visage in Blasphemous

Our Lady of the Charred Visage in Blasphemous

Our Lady of the Charred Visage (what a long name) is one of the three main bosses you need to beat in Blasphemous to progress in the adventure and reach the final stretch. This one in particular is the boss you’ll run into if you take the route through the “Snowy Mountain” area.

As you can see, she’s a sort of half-bald “flying lady’s head” with lots of burns on her face. Some of the items you pick up around the area tell the story of a very beautiful girl who ended up burning her face to “give her beauty to God” (to sum it up a lot). Maybe that’s this boss… although I don’t think so; her face looks more like someone threw burning gold on it or something like that. Anyway, it’s still too early to talk lore, but that day will come.

Location in Blasphemous

Our Lady of the Charred Visage is located in the “Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage“, a convent at the very top of the Snowy Mountain area.

To get to this area you need to start from the “Wasteland of the Buried Churches”: on the right you’ll find a tower that gives you access to different areas. Go to the top and to the left and you’ll be in a snowy area. From there, just keep moving forward and you’ll eventually come across the convent. To know you’re in the right area, it’s called “Where Olive Trees Wither”.

And I’m not going to lie to you: the area on the way to the boss is generally a real pain (you’ll probably die many times), much more than the boss herself, who’s no pushover either.

How to Beat Our Lady of the Charred Visage

The boss is pretty tough: she’ll fire tons of projectiles, and sometimes they’ll be almost impossible to dodge. Luckily, there’s a girl at the boss entrance who will offer to help you. Accept it, because otherwise the boss will be really hard. Or, well, maybe you’d rather do it without that help; that’s your call.

Attack Guide

These are Our Lady of the Charred Visage’s attacks:

  • Laser Beam: The Lady’s hands will sometimes fire laser beams at you. Beforehand, a trail appears in the hand showing where the laser will go, so you have plenty of time to dodge it.
  • Projectile Volley: Another very common attack is bursts of projectiles in different patterns, usually forming spirals that come out faster or slower depending on her mood. When they’re slow, it’s fairly easy to find the gap; when they’re fast, it’s almost impossible.
  • Ball Toss: Other times the hands will throw a sort of red ball at you that you can send back toward the hand if you hit it with Mea Culpa. After you return a few, the hand will be disabled for a while, so this is really worth doing.

Also keep in mind that sometimes both hands will attack at the same time, occasionally creating horrible combinations where you’ll probably take quite a bit of damage. It’s a bit random in that respect.

Strategy

To damage Our Lady of the Charred Visage, you’ll have to hit her on the part of her head where a bit of her brain is showing. It’s the only spot where you can hurt her.

Remember that in this fight you have someone helping you. At first it seems like she isn’t doing anything, but she actually helps a ton. Every so often (a fairly long while) she’ll cast a spell that’s nothing less than a heal for the Penitent One, so this girl will take care of keeping your health high.

Of course, that won’t be enough if you’re careless and take a lot of damage, but remember you can heal yourself too. Still, if you see the girl casting the spell, wait. Heal when you’re really low, but don’t risk dying either.

As for strategy, this is a fight that’s more about staying alive (a war of attrition). Your priority is dodging, because if you manage not to take too much damage, the healer girl can keep healing you without any trouble while you deal damage. But only attack when it’s safe or while dodging certain attacks. Going in swinging isn’t productive at all against this boss, who also has a lot of health.

Tips

Some tips to make the encounter easier:

  • Let the girl help you.
  • In the area before the boss you’ll find a Rosary Bead called “Muted Bell“. You should equip it, since it reduces the magic damage the Penitent One takes, and this boss is pure magic damage.

And not much else beyond what I’ve already covered. It’s best to be cautious and hit her whenever you can, focusing above all on taking as little damage as possible. That’s the best advice I can give you.
